Female celebs like Hong Kong Carina Lau, Taiwanese pop princess Jolin Tsai and model Lin Chi-Ling are learning this the hard way.
Recently, Chinese netizens scoured the web for photos of the female celebrities and posted them for discussion under titles such as "Women will become confident seeing these" and "They're not any prettier than you".
The pictures showed that a number of female celeb looking vastly different before and after applying makeup.
Some netizens even dissed the celebs, advising them not to "put so much makeup, otherwise it feels like [we] saw a ghost after the makeup is removed".
Chi-ling, who is complimented for her good looks, was not spared from the ordeal. In 2007, the model was in China attending a charity event when media described Chi-ling as "disfigured". Chi-ling was suffering from an allergy, which caused rashes to appear on her face.
Although 45-year-old Carina maintained her complexion with utmost care, the actress was once photographed without makeup. In the picture, Carina looked haggard and her brows appeared thin, making her look no different from the aunt next door.
In 2008, Jolin was pictured with a serious acne problem. At that time, the singer angrily said that she took it to heart when the media said her face rotting.
