Photographer and film-maker Wing Shya let slip that Richard Li might have secretly married former actress Isabella Leong, mother of his eight-month-old son Ethan.
Shya, 46, told Chinese reporters on Wednesday that he had shot Li and Leong's wedding photos when Leong returned to Hong Kong from San Francisco with her son in December last year.
Shya knew Leong even before she entered the entertainment industry and became good friends while working together on numerous magazine and movie poster projects.
"Actually the point was not to take the photos but to see an old friend. I'm happy for her. She got married and gave birth to a son," said Shya.
As though realising he had committed a faux pas, Shya immediately backpedaled.
"I should not talk about her, it is too sensitive, I promised her I wouldn't bring it up," he said. "No, it should be she had a child but hasn't gotten married yet."
Despite seeing Li, chairman of Hong Kong telecommunications giant PCCW, for over two years, Leong and Li had not tied the knot as the Li family objected to Leong's modest background, profession and her low education level.
However, the situation has changed since Leong gave up her acting career, went to study English in Stanford University and most importantly, bore the Li family a male heir.
Leong's recent return to Hong Kong with her son was rumoured to have two main purposes: to let Ethan meet his grandfather, billionaire Li Ka Shing, and to discuss her nuptials with Richard Li.
With Leong a changed woman and Li Ka Shing reportedly very fond of grandson Ethan, it would not be surprising if Shya's slip of the tongue turned out to be true.
