Actress Karena Lam, who had been shying away from the limelight, recently attended an event in Hong Kong.

The actress and several guests watched a group of children perform, and even picked them up and played with them.

Karena, who wore a loose blouse, seemed to have lost weight. She laughed and revealed that her secret to burning calories was taking care of her daughter herself.

"My daughter is slowly growing up. Wherever I go, she will follow. I don't want to rely on my maid, so that's why I managed to lose weight so fast," Karena let on.

The actress returned to Hong Kong in July. Responding to previous rumours that her marriage is on the rocks and that she had returned to the city only to keep an eye on her husband, Karena laughed, "My husband and I love Hong Kong. His family is here. We had a mutual agreement earlier to move back [to Hong Kong]."

When the actress was asked if she would want to have a son, Karena replied, "[I will] have to think about it. I'll consider [having another child] when my daughter's a little older."

The actress also expressed that she is currently without an agent and will be arranging her work personally. She let on that she is in talks to star in a musical.

Commenting on the terms of her return to showbiz, the actress expressed, "I don't want to work long hours or travel overseas. If a movie is filmed entirely in Hong Kong, I might consider."

Her English name is Karena, so her daughter's English also starts with a K, named Kayla. Karena and her husband carried baby Kayla and accepted an interview by [Mingpao Weekly]. They revealed that when she was in labor, her baby's heartbeat dropped rapidly, making it was a frightening process. When she sees her daughter now, it's hard to describe her happiness, just having her daughter is everything, she will temporarily say goodbye to the entertainment circle and focus on giving care to her daughter.

Mid-September, Karena was accused of falling in love with a married man, Steve Yuen, who is an advertising director. An anonymous email exposed a pregnant woman who looks like Karena was doing pregnancy check ups in a Canadian hospital. Karena's love life has been rough. When she signed her management company in 2001, it was said she was dating her boss Wong Hoi Fung. In 2004, she generously admitted dating music producer Chan Kwong Wing, who just separated with his wife. However, their relationship only last a year. Now a magazine reported she was in love with another married man---commercial and MV director Yuen Kim Wai. The two have been dating for 2 years. Because Yuen's wife lives in Beijing, Karena even moved to the same building the Yuens live. Earlier this year, this secret relationship was exposed and because Karena didn't want to harm the family anymore, she backed out and left HK after attending to some events in March.

After five unsuccessful runs for the top prize at the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA), a disillusioned Karena Lam has quit showbiz.

The 31-year-old's contract ended at the end of last year after her final film roles in Lover's Discourse and the 3-D Don Quixote. She continued promoting the movies until March this year, but has since returned to school and even relieved her longtime assistant of her duties.

Producers of Don Quixote revealed during the movie's recent Beijing press conference that its lead actress, who was surprisingly absent, is actually studying in France.

It is not known if Karena is leaving the industry altogether or just taking a break.

Born in Canada and now expected to return there, the singer-actress made her debut in Taiwan at the tender age of 17.

But it was her first feature film July Rhapsody that shot her to stardom, as she grabbed the Best Newcomer and Best Supporting Actress awards at both the HKFA and Golden Horse Awards.

Since then, however, the HKFA Best Actress trophy has eluded the five-time nominee, who even once acted in a play pro bono so as to refine her skills.
