Ten years ago Triumph in the Skies starring Francis Ng, Joe Ma, Flora Chan and Myolie Wu started the surge of handsome pilots. Last year, TVB had plans to start shooting the 40 episode sequel (Triumph in the Skies II) in May, but because of schedule conflicts with Francis, it was said the schedule was pushed back to mid-July. For the sequel, the leads will be Francis, Chilam Cheung, Myolie Wu and Fala Chen.

When speaking of Francis delaying the shoot, TVB executive Tommy Leung didn't deny, and expressed there are several reasons to the delay. He said the series will start mid-July and shooting will take place in England, France and Taiwan. Indeed, this is a high budgeted production. Earlier it was said Ricky Wong intends to shoot a similar series, Tommy expressed its good to have competition, but TVB won't care about what others do, just do their best in their own part.

Fala Chen joins the TITS2 cast as one of the lead actresses because she's been having amazing momentum lately. In Mainland's Huading Award Hundred Artist Rankings, Fala ranks 13th place. First place is Yang Mi, but Fala is the highest ranking Hong Kong artist. In regards to her achievement, Fala accepted an interview over the phone, she said she hopes to have more Mainland productions, but the most important is to have more opportunities for challenging roles. When speaking of joining the TITS2 as the lead, Fala said she anticipates working with both Francis and Chilam on a TV series. She collaborated with Francis before in a film, and really admires his acting. She hopes she can learn something from him in this collaboration. Fala also expressed she hopes to have the opportunity to play a female pilot because it's hot looking.

Sammul Chan may come back for sequel

[Next Magazine] Since TVB gave up their favorite Sammul Chan, he has been having a smooth development in Mainland. Three years ago, his popular hit Schemes of A Beauty got him an amazing salary increase of 20,000 RMB per episode. Now, aside from CTI's Ricky Wong having interest in him, Sammul's former company TVB also intends to make friends with him again. It was understood, Sammul's cousin is TVB's new boss 'The Shell King' Chan Kwok Keung and this doubles the chances for Sammul to make a comeback. He was offered 20,500 HKD per episode, in hope he'll be willing to come back for TITS2.

Since Sammul wasn't TVB's 'biological son', he had been neglected all along. "TVB wants to promote their own people, and since Sammul wasn't willing to sign a management contract, even if The Academy was well-received, he had little screen time in the sequel. That year at the TVB Anniversary Awards, Sammul wasn't even part of the nominations."

"In fact, Ricky Wong personally flew over to Shanghai, where Sammul was, to discuss a contract with him. Ricky offered him 10,000 HKD per episode, which is tenfold of what TVB pays, but at the time Sammul had a few Mainland series on hand, so he had to turn Ricky down."

"Now that TVB is lacking Siu Sang and FaDans and its a mess internally. TVB's new boss, Chan Kwok Keung, is in fact Sammul's cousin and so he's considered 'one of them'. So, Chan has sent out people to contact Sammul, asking him to participate in TVB's grand production TITS2. Coincidentally, TITS2 has been postponed, let's hope Sammul has time on his schedule!"

In the recent year, Sammul Chan has been focused on developing in Mainland and rarely sees his HK fans. Earlier he came back to HK to rest for half a month, and conveniently set up a fans gathering. Wonder if its been too long since Sammul's been in HK, but many fans didn't even have dinner yet, and already wanted pictures with their idol. Sammul fulfilled all requests.

Earlier, Ricky Wong established new television station CTI, Sammul was asked if he invited him over? He said: "Actually I have a pretty good relationship with Mr. Wong. Earlier he flew all the way to Taiwan, where I was working at the time, to talk to me!" It was understood Ricky has intentions to use he and Maggie Cheung, two former TVB artists, in a new series to fight TVB. He said: "Nothing has been confirmed yet, I don't know anything!" Sammul also stressed he completely enjoys working in Mainland because of the high salary and good benefits. When asked if he's afraid TVB would label him as a traitor? He said: "Nope, there are many people in this society that changes jobs. So are they all traitors too? TVB treats me OK too, just there are some people I don't like."

There has been a recent wave of TVB Siu Sang and FaDans leaving the company, like Charmaine Sheh, Sammul Chan and Joe Ma. In 2003, Sammul became popular after Triumph in the Skies and was known as 'S4' along with Bosco Wong, Kenneth Ma and Ron Ng. Earlier, Sammul ended his relationship with TVB and even criticized the company on iCable's interview that they are harsh to their artists. He expressed his hard work in TVB was ignored for several years and wasn't even part of the nominations for awards. He also exposed that he even had to haggle over a HK$10 raise when he was discussing for a contract renewal.

Not sure if its because of his criticisms that angered TVB, but Sammul is 'kicked out' of the Triumph in the Skies (TITS) sequel. It was said that TVB will start shooting TITS sequel at the end of this year and a movie version next year. Back then, S4 members Bosco, Kenneth and Ron of course will get boosted into fame, while Sammul gets kicked out because he already left TVB. His role is said to be replaced by Raymond Lam, creating a new S4!

In fact, when TITS broadcast in 2003, it quickly became a popular hit. TVB had always hoped to shoot a sequel with the original cast. Although they couldn't get the 'housewife killer' pilot Francis Ng back, TVB initially considered Alex Fong, Anthony Wong and Jessica Hsuan to take over, but unfortunately things did not work out. According to sources, the TITS sequel is one of TVB's grand productions this year with plans to shoot in Australia, Japan and other locations in Southeast Asia. TVB looks into adding new faces and a fresh feeling, such as the recent rising stars 'gamers' goddess' Cilla Lok and 'super voice' Mag Lam.

Producer Tommy Leung expressed over the phone yesterday: "TVB is planning to shoot a sequel at the end of this year and next year the movie version. Currently for any popular series, we will consider a movie version, so our artists can become both TV and movie stars."

Many of the cast from TITS have already left TVB including Flora Chan, who had a major reduction in jobs after she had her daughter, Michelle Ye who went to the big screen and most important Francis Ng's chances of coming back to TVB is not very high.

About Joe Ma's contract expiration? Tommy said: "Initially I wanted to get the original cast, and then add new characters. If the series didn't use newcomers, then there wouldn't be a S4!"

Yesterday Joe Ma expressed over the phone that he hopes to participate in the sequel: "There are many ways of collaborating, I am not worried. It would be best if there is an opportunity to shoot a movie version. It's hard shooting a series, and to be able to have performances on other platforms, then that is my personal achievements for my hard work." Back then in TITS, Joe became popular from his character Vincent, he admits that he really likes the role, but the story explained Vincent had died. If they shoot a sequel, it would be hard to bring the character back to life again, Joe said: "We can't figure it out either, it is the hard efforts of the scriptwriter."

Regarding the news of being 'kicked out' of the series, Sammul's manager was agitated: "We don't have a contract with TVB, we are the ones that ditched them! We are not TVB people anymore. It was only that time when he still had a contract with them that he had to shoot anything they asked! It's not necessary for them to ask him to shoot the series now! They have so many people! (Has TVB contacted you?) Why would they contact us, we still have 3 series to shoot, no time!"

Reality is always ironic. When mom is watching Sammul Chan on TV in TVB's Relic of an Emissary, dad is reading about him promoting an ATV program on the newspaper. Meanwhile, his younger siblings are on the internet rewatching his iCable interview. The same blood and flesh person appears on three different media. Sammul wins it all! Leaving 3 colored blood for several years and trained a good actor, although Sammul says Byebye to his maternal home, he does not regret: "I am very well-behaved in TVB! I am obedient, almost so obedient I didn't have friends! No, actually I have a lot of friends here, Stephen Chan treats me well!"

"Really worked so much can't even vomit"

Unfortunately, this 'obedient son' still decided to leave, Sammul said: "Before I left, I did a Mainland series, but we are still shooting series, how come one side I'm exhausted and the other side I get to rest? Although I am not telling you to shoot an art film, 100% spirit and mental state is required for a good production, we still need to have an explanation for the audience. Why do we not get to rest? If not in a good mental state, how can we make a good production? I don't understand why when shooting in Mainland, you get to rest and since it's like that, is it necessary for me to endure this pressure?" He continued: "Sometimes I worked until it's like beyond vomiting, not actually vomiting, but really am exhausted. So exhausted that I want to sleep all the time. On the next day I am scared I won't be able to get up! I remember when I was shooting The Academy, there was a lot of physical labor, once there's free time, I would lie down to sleep. Ron Ng, Fiona Sit and I would go out running for a round and then once there is time, we would nap. After work, we had to go back again early in the morning and do the same thing over again. Oh My God!"

Denies becoming ignorant

Sammul is a practical person. He feels work and salary should be directly proportional. Unfortunately things do not turn out that way: "The salary in Mainland is enough for me to use, no longer do I need to worry about not being able to pay off my car or house. I don't have to worry about giving housekeeping money to mom and don't have any left for myself! Thinking back, that day when I was in some room at TVB and they gave me a contract to sign, I said it's so many pages and it's all in English, I should be able to take it home and look at it. Unexpectedly, the next day they said I have to decide immediately. I said it's a big event in life! Let me think about it! Later they didn't contact me again! In fact, it's not too bad, I am pretty happy now!"

When speaking of his freedom outside of TVB, Sammul's lip raises up: "In fact before I was pretty comfortable, but after leaving it's much better. At least I don't have to see the colleagues I don't like anymore, and can see how the outside productions are like. See different things out there!"

Epilogue: TV King, when is it my turn?

TV King or money, what does he choose? Despite having proponents on both sides, Sammul goes practical again: "It's more important to have something to eat! TV King gives you fame, although you get more money, but there is only one TV King a year, when will it be my turn? If I can't earn money now, then should I suffer until I become TV King and then earn the money? But, going out to work is risky too, it's like buying stocks, it is possible I will fail!"

Sammul Chan and Fish Leong were recording for ATV's program Enrich Your Lifestyle yesterday. First time stepping into ATV, Sammul had the Executive (Yip Ka Po) to accompany him. When asked if he's signing a contract with ATV? He laughed: "I am just taking a tour to visit the boss and Producer Gary Tang, see if there are any opportunities to collaborate."

Yip Ka Po reveals that he already invited Sammul to attend the ATV Anniversary and has intentions to have him participate in a ATV anniversary series. Towards this, Sammul smiled: "Because in the last half year, I will be in Mainland shooting, so I'm arranging the jobs for next year now. (Attending ATV's anniversary, is he afraid TVB might cut him off?) I went on TVB's anniversaries for so many years, it's fair, I will go on iCable's too!"

In the past, Sammul Chan did not have much gossips, only rumors of being on bad terms with Ella Koon, Fiona Sit, Shirley Yeung and other female artists. Recently, he created big trouble for himself and scolded TVB's harsh contract conditions after he left the company. This led to his leading role in Relic of an Emissary turn into a supporting role.

10 years ago, Sammul was supported by the two big people in the industry Leslie Cheung (Gor Gor) and Alam Tam, but he didn't get to race past anyone and become popular. Until his participation in TVB series Triumph in the Skies and Survivor's Law that his popularily began to rise. It was rumored at the time that because he wasn't a TVB contracted artist that he wasn't able to make it up to first line artists and lost out in the TVB awards. Last year he took part in his very last series Relic before his contract expired and formally ended his relationship with TVB.

Won TV King for 'Schemes of Beauty'

Recently, Sammul focused in the Mainland market. Besides earning a lot of Chinese Yuan, he also won TV King at last year's 2010 'Seoul TV Festival'. His career was finally made certain. What was so unexpected was TVB started airing both of his series Relic and Schemes of Beauty at the same time. As the leading actor, Sammul came back to Hong Kong to do promotions and during one iCable interview, he opened fire on TVB's coldness, which led to constant gossips. Sammul said: "I did not open fire or complain, I have been in this company for over 10 years. That time, I was purely just sharing my own views, voicing out my opinions. There are people in the public displeased, perhaps because I went to iCable to do the interview, but iCable as a TV station has the right to broadcast whatever or delete whatever. In the interview, I talked about both positive and negatives, happiness and unhappiness. Perhaps that will become something negative when it broadcasts, when you watch the interview, it seems like there are a lot of dissatisfaction and anger. In fact, I expected iCable would cut out some stuff."

Has the poker chips, Has courage

Sammul describes himself just like a child. In the past, he was prohibited to go to certain places. Now that he's grown to be an adult, he can go whatever he wishes, naturally will he want to go those places he couldn't before. Does he regret opening this prohibited door? He said: "No, I already said what I had to, regret will not do anything. (Is it because you have the 'poker chips' that are you aren't afraid to take this step?) I do have this element, otherwise I'm just asking for it, but it's not because of the 'poker clips' that I have to do it. It is because I am mature now, I have the courage to share with others, not leave it in my memories."

Sammul continued: "In fact, after so many years, I have more experience. When I first entered the industry, there were a lot of things I didn't dare to do, but now I learned that it should be done at anytime." What did things did you say that iCable cut out? He said: "A lot, I talked about how I grew in the 11 years I was with TVB, otherwise I would not have the jobs I have today. The greatest affect was I have never been in the acting class. I started off as an extra, like Chow Yun Fat. I just stood aside and learned how to act. In some cases, only TVB can give this opportunity to me, every year there are many series produced, to my acting career it is a great foundation."

"Don't trouble friends"

Sometimes, it is best to act more and speak less. Today complaining about his old company, has he become the person troubling TVB? Sammul said: "I am not considered troublesome, using the word autistic fits more closely. I will have self-control, many things I will not just do it, for example I really want to go out late at night, but I considered the affect on my image, what happens after drinking and losing control, so I controlled myself and didn't go. (Less ways to relieve stress?) For work, I discuss with my manager and just share with my family. They just listen to me complain. My sister answered a lot of my complaining phone calls. I know I have my family's final support. In fact, sometimes relieving stress is easy, you can go to the beach and listen to the waves or go spend money. Eat an expensive meal or buy a famous brand watch. Eating ice cream is the stress reliever I often use, I can eat a whole bucket of ice cream."

Don't suck up to Executives

Working in TVB for over 10 years, Sammul is grateful of Lee Tim Shing. "Tim Gor is the first producer that was willing to use me for his series. The other is A Bride for a Ride producer Poon Ka Tak. During shooting, he gave me great encouragement. TVB Foreign Affairs Director Tsang Sing Ming, I also have to thank. It is because of my manager that I know him. He regards me as his child. Before it was said that he was watching for my mistakes at events, but in fact we had a meal before the event, he wanted to accompany me to the event. He wasn't sent by TVB to watch me."

Don't need to thank Virgina Lok or Stephen Chan? Sammul said: "I don't keep in touch with them often. I am not a managed artist, and rarely do I get invited to the executive parties. I also don't like to suck up to Executives. But, they are very friendly people, when we meet in TVB we do greet with a smile and exchange a few words. (Why not pay a visit?) Every one has a different personality, artists have different faces. Other people doing it, doesn't mean I have to too because I cannot past my own conscience."

Hope for a day that's not being silly

Sammul reveals that his future work is already scheduled. He currently has 3 series that he needs to shoot and do something he wants now that he's left TVB. For example, he wants to participate in the HK stage play tours because he really likes that type of close interaction with live audience. "This is a job that I couldn't do when still signed with TVB. TVB did not allow me to leave HK for a long period because there are many series waiting for you to shoot. (Have you thought of winning a Mainland award?) It's hard for Hong Kong artists to win awards in Mainland because it's 1.3 billion people compared to 8 million. Also there are a lot of people in Mainland who are drama professionals. However, I will pull in all the effort I can and hope to win an award within the next 5-10 years based on my skills. I feel that you need to pay a big price and effort for fame, and this type of award is the most valuable. So I dislike 'awards', although people laugh at me that I'm being silly, I hope one day I'm not being silly, but can still reach my goal and desires."

Recently on iCable's interview Sammul Chan expressed his dissatisfaction for TVB. Yesterday he went back to TVB City to record The Green Room talk show. There are news saying that TVB is secretly trying to cut off Sammul, besides deleting scenes from his series Relic of an Emissary, he is also taken out of the shows All Star Glam Exam and Book of Words. Sammul responded to TVB cutting him off, he said: "I don't believe this, such a big company, no reason why they can't tolerate this. If they wanted to cut me off, they would have long ago. Saying it now is just a big joke."

It was said Sammul turned down 7 figures Mainland drama to shoot Relic. Later when his lead role became a supporting role, he greatly felt that it was not worth it, he said: "Right now I do in fact feel hesitant, but I cannot say I'm regretting it. If I could pull back a Mainland drama, I will because I was surprised to see the Relic poster. I thought I would be standing in the middle position, but it turns out that I'm lined up in the 3rd or 4th position. There is a discrepancy between what was said to be done at first, I was disappointed." TVB Foreign Affairs Director (Tsang Sing Ming) responded stressing that they absolutely not trying to cut Sammul off. Although Sammul and TVB does not have a contract, the good relationship still remains. TVB also did not reduce his screen time, everything reported is not true.

Sammul Chan, Elanne Kong, Michael Tse, Joe Ma, Kate Tsui and the rest of the cast to TVB new series Relic of an Emissary held the series promotion at Olympian City yesterday. The cast appeared in their costumes from the series, except for Sammul who appeared in modern clothing. Earlier Sammul greatly groaned about being displeased with TVB on an iCable's interview. He reveals that he had a heated dispute with TVB over a 10 something dollar pay raise. Yesterday with the Director of Foreign Affairs (Tsang Sing Ming) standing besides him, Sammul clearly toned down his attitude, Mr. Tsang just said: "I just had dinner with Sammul, everything is going smoothly."

Then, the two did an interview together, Sammul said he does not have a contract with TVB anymore, and was just sharing his personal feelings on the iCable interview: "I am now independent, its rare, going on different stations is a good thing. (Dissatisfied over 10 something dollars?) It's not about what company or what people, it's just sharing my personal feeling, just for a competent interview." Mr. Tsang was asked if TVB was being stingy over 10 something dollars? Sammul spoke up and defended: "Don't trouble him, he wasn't the one that discussed with me!"

As for it he's afraid of offending TVB? Mr. Tsang responded saying that both sides have plans for collaborations, Sammul also will go on The Green Room interview. Asked if he'll expose more later? Sammul said: "See how the host conducts the interview first! I won't avoid! (Mr. Tsang is right besides you!) No, he is just a passerbyer! (Shoot more TVB series?) Depends on the script, I don't mind collaborating again, before I just had too high expectations. (Want to be paid for a high price?) We'll discuss it! It is most important that I am willing to do it, and that I'm satisfied!" He expressed now that he is a freelancer, his opportunities has increased, but he avoided talking about how much he makes.

Michael Tse lots of passionate love scenes

Michael Tse expressed that he does not feel that his limelight is stolen, and said that his contract discussions had went smoothly every time. In the series, he plays Kam Yi Wai, who is a bodyguard, Michael reveals that there will be lots of action and passionate love scenes. His female partners "are so many, can't remember!"

First time shooting a costume drama, Elanne Kong expressed that she plays a Princess with princess illness. She hopes that she won't scare away the opposite sx and exposed that she had always had pursuers, but for now they have not touched her heart yet: "If they are still waiting when they're 30, I'll consider! In fact, I do hope to try a relationship that is strong and vigorous!"

In the recent years, many TVB FaDans and Siu Sangs are leaving the company to go up north to shoot series. Besides a benefit in expanding the Chinese market, the pay is much higher! Currently 32 years old, Sammul Chan joined the "Going Up North Army" last August and ends his relationship with TVB. A few days ago, Sammul accepted iCable's interview and revealed the reason behind his bitterness: "After my contract ended, I continue to discuss with TVB on a contract renewal. However because of a dispute for a small few 10 HKD raise, it did not work out, so not worth it!" He reveals that he once considered becoming a TVB 'biological son', but because the conditions were harsh, he backed out: "An executive invited me to discuss a contract with them. In the terms, it clearly said that it would be a 10 year contract, but the salary will remain the same. I don't want to argue anything, but who could guarantee that no one will offer me other jobs in the next two years? At that time how can I live on?"

During the interview, Sammul spoke in Cantonese and felt it was refreshing: "Before, I was forced to speak Mandarin. Every time I attended public events, I would hide and avoid being on camera, I'm clearly already on the big stage, what am I afraid of?" When speaking of once being part of the group along with Ron Ng, Bosco Wong and Kenneth Ma that was heavily promoted by TVB, seeing other people reaching up top, inside Sammul felt that it was not right. He said: "I clearly put in the effort on my work, and was acknowledged by the audience, but my peers received awards after awards and I was to stand aside without anything. I wasn't even part of the nominations." He directly said that being 'obedient' is the way to survive in TVB: "I didn't know how to do that!"

Regarding this matter, reporters contacted TVB Foreign Affairs Director (Tsang Sing Ming) to confirm. He said: "Sammul's contract did in fact already expired. He is now a freelance artist and our relationship is doing well. He even agreed to come back and promote for the upcoming new series. If he really does have opinions, then I will try to get an understanding."

TVB GM Stephen Chan has been charged by the ICAC for corruption. Tomorrow (9/21st) is the court hearing. Once said to be part of the "Stephen Party", Sammul Chan attended TVB new series The Comeback Clan promotional event yesterday and could not get away with being asked about Stephen. Sammul was asked if he's still supporting Stephen or is he drawing a line with him? He said: "I will support him because today I have go back to Mainland to film a series, so I won't be in Hong Kong and I haven't kept in touch with him. Also the case has entered judicial process, I cannot say too much. He is a good boss in the eyes of us employees. (Tomorrow will you support him?) I will be in Mainland filming, will support him in spirit!"

Sammul expressed that he does not need to go testify in court. Heard there will be about 50 artists going to court to testify, he said: "Mr. Chan's events that I attended were all voluntary. No fee, so I didn't get involved with business and money issues." He also expressed that he has never said he's part of the "Stephen Party".

Also at the promotion, Natalie Tong expressed that case has not been ruled by the court yet, so cannot comment. She said: "I will support him in spirit, I will send him a SMS to comfort him, but I won't call him. I don't want to trouble him."

The day before, Sammul Chan participated in the Shanghai Oriental TV charity event. He started off with 1 yuan and after "exchange of goods" he reached his target of 100,000 yuan in donations. The funds are for the children school in Yimeng mountain.

Sammul first started with a snack shop, serving as a selling clerk and got a huge bag of snacks. Then he changed that for European travel vouchers for two, worth 19,000 yuan. Unfortunately that did not reach his goal, so he went back into the studio and picked out the guest who had goods worth 100,000 yuan. If he guessed wrong, he would have to pay. In the end, Sammul chose the right guest who had 100,000 yuan. He said: "I learned to cherish and love. Happiness is not a necessity. I hope to contribute back to this society."

Currently busily filming Hong Wu Thirty-Two with Joe Ma Tak Chung, Michael Tse Tin Wah, and Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam, Sammul Chan Kin Fung said that he had to sacrifice other money-making opportunities this summer.

Sammul estimated that he lost a seven figure income due to his filming for Hong Wu Thirty-Two. He spoke about his painful loss, “It’s difficult to have it all. If I earn the money, I would not be able to film a good drama. Life is always about compromise!”

Was money or fame more important? Sammul said, “It’s hard to answer. I want everything; I want my youth and health!” What about love? “I want that too. I have not dated in the last three or four years and feel very dry!”

Sammul Chan Kin Fung and Ruby Lin Sum Yu appeared in a press conference for their new television series, Scheming Beauty in Taipei. Although it was the pair’s first onscreen collaboration, Ruby praised Sammul as a cheerful partner. Sammul noted that although Ruby was a big star, she was a very down-to-earth person.

Scheming Beauty’s story was set amidst the Han Dynasty and revolved around the story of Emperor Wen. In the series, various palace ladies fight for higher position and their husband’s fortunes. The women will hold numerous rivalries as their beauty and wits are pitted against each other.

To highlight Sammul and Ruby’s love for each other in Scheming Beauty, the director arranged for numerous bed schemes between the couple. After Sammul Chan has finished filming TVB series, he went out and made some real money. Regarding the rumor outside that said he's "unkindly" treated by TVB, he declined to elaborate on that more. He only expressed that he has some Chinese Mainland series to film, and the pay is much better compared with the one in TVB, and whenever he filmed a TVB series, he only had 2-3 hours of sleep daily at the most, as everyone already started to work early in the morning, came back home very late, and after taking a bath, they all had to work again right away. But whenever he films a Chinese Mainland series, there is ample allotted rest time, and he said, "Besides the good pay, the most important thing in filming a Chinese Mainland series is I can work with different directors and actors, and it really opens my horizons." Even though Sammul didn't reveal how much he earns per episode in China, but it is heard from the film crew of the Chinese Mainland series that he's currently filming, [Yan Yu Xie Yang], that Sammul's pay per episode is about 70,000 RMB, and it is 3 times higher than his pay in TVB.
